Anti-Racist University Sports Training

We want University Sport to be an anti-racist space and for the people involved to be actively anti-racist.

Sports at university should be spaces where all students feel welcome, unfortunately this isn’t the case.

We know that racism is a problem throughout society, including Higher Education, and a lot more needs to be done to support Black students. Many institutions are now committed to becoming anti-racist organisations and we can see the progress that is being made in this area. Our anti-racist training offer exists to support institutions that are committed to becoming anti-racist organisations.

Anti-racist work occurs at both an organisational and personal level, this is a process of continuous improvement that is challenging and takes time. This training supports delegates to explore anti-racism within a university sports context. Helping those individuals to be actively anti-racist and to embed anti-racist practice within their work.

Learning Objectives

Through this training you and your team will explore:

  • Key terms used in tackling anti-racism

  • How racism presents itself in university sport

  • What an active anti-racist institution would look like

  • How to embed anti-racism in university sport

Our offer

  • 6 hours of training designed by experts in diversity, student opportunities and university sport

  • A training workbook to create your action plan

  • An extensive reading & resources list

  • Digital check in meeting with your trainers 3 months on from the training (30 mins)

When & how is it delivered?

Our digital offer

The training is delivered across two half day sessions (3 hours each). This is so that participants have time to reflect between sessions and it also supports focus and engagement while in the (virtual) room.

We can have up to 4 organisations in each training cohort. If we are fully booked we will discuss the next available date with you and others on the waiting list.

All of the training and associated resources will be accessed digitally. The two training sessions will be delivered via Google Hangouts. Details of how to join will be shared with you once you sign up to a cohort.

Our in-person offer

The training is delivered over 1 day (6 hours) with time for lunch in the middle. We can train groups of up to 50 people or as small as 10.

We prefer to work with one organisation at a time but can discuss a collaborative approach.

Testimonials from our anti-racist training

“Thank you this was a super valuable session that I found very eye opening and practical! The structure of content delivery alongside a personal workbook was great at tracking my own thoughts and responses to the topic leaving me with an immediate physical resource to take the learning forward. Great session!”

“[I’ve taken away] a greater awareness and understanding of how to talk about race and how I can use that to support student leaders in resources we create and sessions we run to support them.”

Who is the training for?

The content is tailored to sport at university so we recommend delegates work within a sport context.

The training is useful for staff at all levels, including senior managers and sabbatical officers.

Is this training just for people working in students’ unions?

No - we work with both students’ unions and universities.
